GREENVILLE, S.C.—Kartikeya Singh, a 2007 Furman University graduate, has been selected as one of 22 youth leaders from across the nation to represent the United States at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change in Indonesia.
Singh and the other delegates will travel to Bali in December to participate in negotiations for a new international response to global warming and other environmental issues. The youth delegation is part of the SustainUS Agents of Change program, which supports the involvement of young adults in making environmental policy changes toward greater sustainability. Delegates were selected through a highly competitive process.
Singh was one the 2006 recipients of the Mentor Fellowships from the Compton Foundation of California, which gave him $36,000 to pursue a yearlong environmental project of his choice with a mentor. Singh is working under the guidance of Sunita Narain, director of the Center for Science and Environment in India. The project, “The Leapfrog Factor: Towards a Carbon Neutral India,” will create a policy report proposing responsible energy consumption projects, particularly in the Indian auto industry.
He just recently published an article in The International Journal of Environmental, Cultural, Economic & Social Sustainability titled “The Rise of Asia: Feeling the Weight of the East.”
Singh designed his own major in ecology and sustainable development at Furman. He was a 2007 Furman Fellow and received a 2006 Morris K. Udall Scholarship, an award given to college students who have demonstrated a commitment to pursuing careers related to the environment. He received the university’s 2005 Environmental Studies Award, and was also a member of the Environmental Action Group.
