Furman Receives Renewable Energy Certificates to Offset Campus Electricity Use

Energy produced from wind farms improves air quality and reduces greenhouse gases.
GREENVILLE, S.C. — SKY Energy, Inc., a Greenville-based renewable energy company, has contributed 1,250,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of Wind-e Renewable Energy Certificates to Furman University in recognition of the school’s Year of the Environment celebration.

A Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) represents the benefit, in reduced carbon emissions, of one megawatt-hour of electricity generation.  The amount provided to Furman represents approximately 50 percent of the university’s total electricity use for the month of December 2006, which offsets the emission of more than 1.7 million pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

RECs are the certified environmental benefits of wind energy that improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gases. The electricity generated from wind farms is delivered to the national energy grid and not directly to Furman.

This donation qualifies Furman for membership in the Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership, a diverse group of businesses, government agencies and colleges and universities that are investing in renewable energy to reduce the environmental impact of their electricity use.

Furman has declared 2006-07 to be “The Year of the Environment.” Throughout the school year, the university is sponsoring a series of programs, lectures and events to emphasize environmental citizenship and develop greater environmental consciousness, both on campus and off.

SKY Energy® was founded in 2002 by Brian Weninger to market, develop and sell clean, renewable energy to customers nationwide. The company has clients ranging from residences and local businesses, including The Greenville Chamber and Garner’s Natural Market & Café, to large global corporations like Whole Foods Market and Lockheed Martin Corporation.

For more information, visit the Sky Energy website or contact Furman student Colin Hagan at 864-982-2536.
