GREENVILLE, S.C. — The South Carolina Wildlife Federation (SCWF) has given Furman University its Organization Award in recognition of the university’s commitment to sustainability and conservation education.
Furman will receive the award Saturday, Jan. 20 at the organization’s 42nd Annual Conservation Awards Banquet in Pawleys Island.
The SCWF facilitates effective habitat conservation and respect for outdoor traditions for current and future generations through statewide leadership, education, advocacy and partnerships.
Furman is among several organizations and individuals who will be honored at the banquet. In its news release announcing the award winners, the SCWF had this to say about the university:
“Furman University has long been recognized throughout the country for its excellence as a respected liberal arts institution—as well as its leadership on environmental policy issues. Furman is not only one of the most beautiful college campuses in the country, but is demonstrating its stewardship through efficient facilities management and progressive environmental education programs for its students, employees and the surrounding community.
“The university has established myriad programs for reducing its environmental footprint and incorporating ‘green’ architecture. It has integrated low impact and energy conservation programs into its new buildings and facilities and has received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certifications for its Hipp Hall and Duke Library. Modifications in campus management have reduced the consumption of water, materials and energy, and even include the use of recycled water.
“One of the most important elements of Furman’s sustainability program is manifested through its educational experience. Its students actively participate in its faculty’s research and demonstration programs and both faculty and students have been actively engaged in studying environmental conditions of the Upstate’s rivers through the River Basins Research Initiative and as a partner in the Saluda-Reedy Watershed Consortium.”
