GREENVILLE, S.C.—Furman University is among 25 institutions of higher education that have been invited to comprise a steering committee for the American Council on Renewable Energy’s (ACORE) Higher Education Committee.
Dr. Frank Powell, a professor of Health and Exercise Science at Furman and chair of the school’s Year of the Environment initiative, will represent the university on the committee.
The steering committee will encourage higher education institutions to take a leading role in carrying out the mission of ACORE and help move renewable energy into the mainstream of the American economy and lifestyle. Other institutions comprising the steering committee include the University of California-Berkeley, the University of Florida, and Arizona State, Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, Emory and Texas Tech universities.
Powell has been a member of the Furman faculty since 1974. A native of Kentucky, he earned his undergraduate degree from Georgetown College, his M.A. from the University of North Carolina and his Ph.D. from Florida State University. He completed post-doctoral work at the University of California at Los Angeles, and has published numerous articles in the field of health sciences. He also heads up the university’s Year of the Environment, a yearlong initiative to promote environmental sustainability both on and off campus.
