GREENVILLE, S.C. — Paul Roberts, author of the critically acclaimed book The End of Oil, will speak on campus Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 3 p.m. as part of the Riley Institute's National Conference on the Environment.

This is the final day of the Sept. 25-27 conference, “The Environment: Critical Issues of the 21st Century,” which is examining some of the most important environmental issues facing the world today. Former U.S. Senator and astronaut John Glenn kicked off the conference Monday night.

All of today's events, which are open to the public, will be held in the Younts Conference Center.

The New York Times Book Review called Roberts’ The End of Oil a “stunning piece of work—perhaps the best single book ever produced about our energy economy and its environmental implications.”  A journalist since 1983, Roberts writes and lectures on the complex interplay of economics, technology and the natural world.  He also appears regularly on television and radio news shows, including CNN’s Lou Dobbs, CBS Evening News, and NPR’s Morning Edition.

The final day of the conference will also feature addresses by William Laurance, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, and Patricia Adams, Executive Director of Probe International, Canada (4:30-5:45 p.m.), and a panel discussion on “Our Planet, Our Country and the Environment: Acknowledging Reality and Envisioning Policy for the 21st Century” (8 p.m.).

“Economic progress in South Carolina and elsewhere depends on the creation of businesses and economic enterprises, yet pollution, sprawl and environmental degradation increasingly threaten the quality of life of all of our citizens,” said Don Gordon, director of the Riley Institute at Furman.  “This conference will address the challenges of sustaining the environment as we pursue economic trade and development.”
