GREENVILLE, S.C. – Richard W. Riley, former U.S. Secretary of Education and Governor of South Carolina, will be the guest speaker when Furman University holds its Founders Week Convocation Wednesday Apr. 5 at 10 a.m. in McAlister Auditorium.
The convocation is open to the public.
Sponsored by the Student Alumni Council, Founders Week is an annual weeklong series of events celebrating Furman’s history and heritage.
Riley, a 1954 Furman graduate and a member of the university’s Board of Trustees, served as U.S. Secretary of Education under former President Bill Clinton. He also served two terms as Governor of South Carolina from 1978 to 1986. Furman’s Richard W. Riley Institute of Government, Politics and Public Leadership is named in his honor.
In other convocation activities, an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree will be bestowed on Minor Mickel Shaw, a longtime friend of Furman and Greenville civic leader. This year’s recipient of the Richard Furman Baptist Heritage Award will be Kyle Matthews, a 1986 Furman graduate. The Chiles-Harrill Award will also be presented.
