Anthony Barash On Campus As Riley Fellow-In-Residence; Public Lecture On Oct. 6

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Furman University's Richard W. Riley Institute of Government, Politics and Public Leadership will welcome Anthony Barash, a former Bowater executive now working to make democratic changes in the former Soviet republic of Uzbekistan,

Anthony Barash

as its first Fellow-in-Residence of the school year Oct. 4-7.

Barash, who is currently the American Bar Association/Central European and Eurasian Law Initiative (ABA/CEELI) Officer in Uzbekistan, will deliver a public lecture Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 7:30 p.m. in Hartness Pavilion.  His address is titled "Law, Democracy, and the Courts in Central Asia."

With the collapse of the USSR and the transition to more politically liberal regimes, the U.S. State Department moved to help states such as Uzbekistan develop more professional and objective systems of justice. Over the last 18 months, Barash has worked with judges, lawyers, and other legal personnel to change the Uzbeki system to reflect democratic systems of justice.

Barash, who assumed his present position in May 2003, formerly served as senior vice president of Corporate Affairs and General Counsel for Bowater, Inc., in Greenville.  He has served on the Board of Trustees of the Peace Center for the Performing Arts and of the Urban League of the Upstate.  He received his A.B. degree from Harvard College and his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Chicago Law School.

The Riley Institute is a non-partisan institute affiliated with the Furman's Department of Political Science.  For more information, contact the Institute at 864-294-3280 or visit Furman's website at www.furman.edu/riley.
