University Honors Three Alumni With Special Awards During Homecoming Celebration

| Furman honored three of its most distinguished graduates during Homecoming ceremonies last weekend. From left to right are Jack Powers, Charles Turner and Jason Jonathan Deal. | GREENVILLE, S.C. - Three Furman University alumni were honored with special awards during last weekend's Homecoming activities.
Charles F. Turner of Greenville received the Distinguished Alumni Award, while Jason Jonathan Deal of Clermont, Ga., received the Outstanding Young Alumni Award and Jack E. Powers of Simpsonville received the Alumni Service Award. The three were honored at the annual Homecoming Awards Breakfast, which also recognizes Furman's outstanding volunteers.
Turner, a 1962 Furman graduate and a U.S. Army veteran, is founder of the North Greenville Fitness and Cardiac Rehabilitation Clinic, Inc., a national leader in offering detailed health screening tests. He lettered in football and baseball during his Furman career, and served in the Army as a cavalry officer along the East German border during the Cold War. He is on the advisory board for the nursing school at Greenville Technical College, and is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine and the Occupational Health Nurses Association.
Deal, a 1990 Furman graduate with a degree from the law school at the University of Georgia, is the district attorney for Northeastern Judicial Circuit of Georgia, where he serves as the chief prosecutor for Dawson and Hall counties. Prior to that, he was assistant district attorney and magistrate judge for Hall County. He also worked in Washington, D.C., for Senator Sam Nunn and for the U.S. Senate Post Office before enrolling in law school. A graduate of Furman's military program, he is a qualified paratrooper and a Bradley Fighting Vehicle Commander.
Powers, a 1956 Furman graduate, worked with Cryovac for 37 years, retiring in 1996 as director of human resources for the company's North American Operations. In 1990, he was recognized as South Carolina's Human Resources Professional of the Year. He is a class agent, a member of the Furman Admissions Network and a member of the steering committee for the Richard W. Riley Institute. He also has served on the Alumni Association Board of Directors and as president of the Paladin Club. He currently serves as president of Powers and Associates.
