188.4 Telephone Service

A. Background

Furman University maintains a Direct Inward Dialing telephone system which means that most inside and outside calls do not go through the campus switchboard.

B. Policy

Telephone service is provided for members of the faculty and staff. Costs for this service are charged to the department budgets. The University attempts to provide each faculty desk a telephone which is an extension of a central phone supervised by a secretary.

C. Guidelines

1. The telephone switchboard is located in Computing and Information Services in Riley Hall.

2. There is a switchboard operator on duty on regular work days from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Whenever a switchboard operator is not in attendance, emergency calls will be handled by Public Safety.

3. To make on-campus calls, one should dial the last four digits of the numbers listed in the campus directory. To call an outside number, one should dial 9 and listen for the dial tone before dialing the outside number.

4. Instructions for transferring calls, adding a third party, and consultation hold are in the campus telephone directory.

5. The policy concerning charging of long distance calls is described in File 008.4.

6. Collect calls are not accepted by the University.
