840.5 Hiring of Aliens |
A. Background The Immigration and Reform Act of 1986 was passed to provide greater assurance that only foreign nationals with proper credentials are present in the United States. Furman's compliance with this act requires the establishment of policies and procedures which are addressed herein. |
B. Policy Furman University will comply with the law regarding the hiring of aliens. These requirements must be met before any work is performed for the university. |
C. Guidelines 1. Faculty/staff appointments. Applicants for faculty/staff positions at Furman University who are not citizens of the United States must possess either a permanent resident alien card (Green Card, Forms I-151 or Form I-551) or be issued a temporary visa authorizing work in the United States, an H-1 visa. Employment by the university is not effective until this condition has been met. 2. Forms and assistance in applying for an H-1 visa are available from the Human Resources Office. Applications should be filed as early as possible (at least 3 months, but preferably 6 months) in advance of the employment date. It is the responsibility of the applicant to provide all supporting documents required for the application. ........................... |
