836.5 Nondiscrimination, Equal Opportunity, and Affirmative Action |
A. Background The Furman University Board of Trustees passed on May 3, 1977, the following resolution reaffirming the University's policy on nondiscrimination, equal opportunity, and affirmative action. |
B. Policy WHEREAS Furman University is nondiscriminatory in its policies, procedures, and practices and has adopted a program of affirmative action in all matters relating to students and employees; BE IT RESOLVED that Furman University as provided by law, admits students of any race, color, sex, religion, creed, ethnic or national origin, disability, age, or status as a disabled or Vietnam veteran, to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the institution. As provided by law, the University does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, creed, national or ethnic origin, handicap, age, or status as a disabled or Vietnam veteran, in the administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, assignment of dormitory facilities, use of physical facilities, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic or other school-administered programs and activities; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that it is the policy of Furman University, as provided by law, to provide equal employment opportunities without regard to race, color, sex, religion, creed, ethnic or national origin, disability, age, or status as a disabled or Vietnam Veteran. As a religious institution, however, Furman University reserves the right to require those in certain faculty and administrative positions to profess certain religious tenets. This policy applies to all aspects of University employment, including but not limited to recruitment, hiring, placement, upgrading or promotion, demotion, transfer, layoff, recall, termination, rates of pay and other forms of compensation, and selection for training; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that these policies will be periodically brought to the attention of the faculty, staff, students, and public, and will be administered with a positive attitude. It will be the responsibility of each member of the faculty and staff to comply with these policies and the affirmative action and equal opportunity regulations in all matters pertaining to students and employed personnel and in overall University activities. |
C. Guidelines 1. The President of the university has the overall responsibility for the institution's compliance with the nondiscrimination, equal opportunity, and affirmative action policy. 2. An Affirmative Action Officer who reports to the President is responsible for the day-to-day monitoring of Furman's compliance. ........................... |
