600.1 Intercollegiate Athletics

 

A. Background

Furman University has traditionally conducted an intercollegiate athletic program designed to achieve a high level of interest, trust, and support among students, faculty, alumni, and other segments of the university community. A primary concern is to offer a broad-based program that schedules athletic contests for student-athletes commensurate with their abilities.

 

B. Policy

Intercollegiate athletics are to play an important but appropriate role in university life at Furman with male and female students provided equal opportunities for participation in a variety of competitive sports compatible to a college such as Furman. Emphasis is always to be placed on the concept of the student-athlete. In no case will the net expenses of the intercollegiate athletic program be an amount which is detrimental to the university's academic program.

 

C. Guidelines

1. The intercollegiate athletic program is to be administered with integrity, always conforming to the rules and regulations of the University, the Southern Athletic Conference, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

2. The University will provide the necessary resources to enable student-athletes to compete in the Southern Conference and to compete in any NCAA championships for which teams or individuals quality.

3. Because of cost concerns, the intercollegiate athletic program is to be managed efficiently and economically.

4. Financial support of the intercollegiate athletic program is to be underwritten substantially by gate receipts, gifts to the Paladin Club (athletic booster club) for scholarships, and the other scholarship funds endowed for athletics.

5. An athletic staff is to be employed that process the philosophy, knowledge, skills, and leadership qualities to conduct programs in a manner mentally, morally, and physically beneficial to student-athletes.

6. Steps are to be taken to ensure that Furman athletes receive sufficient and accurate sports publicity.
