292.5 International Students

A. Background

Furman University has long recognized its responsibility in providing the opportunity for international scholars to study at the University. It recognizes that our American students' education will remain incomplete without exposure to other experiences. International students have traditionally provided opportunities for members of the University community to understand better the attitudes and cultures of persons from other countries. Entry into the United States by international students is regulated by the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service which requires a number of actions including documentation, reports, and controls by educational institutions enrolling international students.

B. Policy

Furman University encourages the matriculation of qualified international students and attempts to ease their adjustments to the University community and to the United States.

C. Guidelines

1. The University adheres to the requirements of the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service concerning these persons.

2. The Vice President for Student Services designates a International Student Advisor.

3. International students must give evidence of sufficient resources to meet all educational expenses including tuition, fees, room, board, and travel.

4. International students must demonstrate the necessary English language proficiency to engage in the regular studies at the University.

5. The International Student Advisor will issue the Certificate of Eligibility (Form I-20) and/or an Application for Student Transfer (Form I-538) upon notification of acceptance of the student by the Admissions Office.

6. The appropriate University department director will notify the International Student Advisor of those instances where accepted students who have received either Form I-20 or Form I-538, did not register on the date expected, is carrying less than a full course of study, or for any reason has terminated attendance.

7. International students must obtain approval for on-campus or off-campus employment from the International Student Advisor.
