273.5 Student Health Services

A. Background

Furman University has traditionally been a predominately residential college which has required most students to live in either the residence halls on campus or with parents. While this policy has not been changed in the catalogue, some exceptions are currently being made. Since no specific health fee is charged, all undergraduate, full-time students, whether residential or commuters, are eligible to receive the same health services.

B. Policy

The Earle Infirmary Staff will respond to health needs of any full-time, undergraduate student who reports to the infirmary during clinic hours as defined in the Health Services brochure furnished to all students and whose health record is on file. The infirmary staff will respond to any emergency on campus during clinic hours. Faculty members, employees of the institution, visitors, and other non-students are eligible only for emergency first aid when the emergency occurs on campus.

C. Guidelines

1. Physicians work part-time with hours being from 10:30 A.M.-12:00 Noon, Monday-Friday. They are on call twenty-four (24) hours a day.

2. Nurses are on duty twenty-four (24) hours, seven (7) days a week when the residence halls are open.

3. All medication dispensed in the infirmary is covered by student fees. Any medication not stocked in the infirmary must be purchased by a student at a pharmacy off campus.

4. The infirmary will not be responsible to any degree, financial or otherwise, for treatment rendered by physicians not employed by Furman University. Appropriate referrals will be made by the infirmary staff.
