198.1 Special Services Program

A. Background

The University under special circumstances admits students whose statistical chances of graduation are questionable. In an attempt to increase those chances a Special Services Program has been structured to offer academic assistance to such students.

B. Policy

As a service to any student who desires it, the Special Services Program offers assistance for educationally disadvantaged students, primarily in their first year at Furman.

C. Guidelines

1. The program is under the supervision of the Director of Special Services.

2. Aspects of the Special Services Program include:

a. Remediation in specific skill areas

b. Free tutoring by other students

c. Counseling

d. Evaluation and advisement.

3. A special noncredit class for the improvement of reading and learning skills is offered. Those enrolled in the class meet with the instructor four sessions per week for five weeks and receive access to a self-improvement laboratory where self- instructional materials are available in reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary, study skills, and mathematics.

4. The sessions do not interfere with individual academic schedules.

5. All students are advised of the availability and costs of the program and may make arrangements to participate by contacting the Director of Special Services on the third floor of the library.

6. Faculty members may refer students who experience academic difficulty to the Director of Special Services for an evaluation conference investigating how Special Services might be helpful.
