196.1 Meritorious Teaching Award

 

A. Background

Through the benefaction of Mr. and Mrs. Alester G. Furman, Jr., endowment to provide an annual award for meritorious teaching by a Furman faculty member has been established.

 

B. Policy

The Alester G. Furman, Jr., and Janie Earle Furman Award for Meritorious Teaching is granted annually to the Furman faculty member(s) judged to have been most effective in his or her (their) undergraduate teaching during the academic session.

 

C. Guidelines

1. The award is in cash, the amount to be determined annually by the President based upon income derived from the endowment fund.

2. The recipient(s) is (are) selected by an unannounced Selection Committee composed of faculty and students and appointed annually by the President.

3. The selection is announced at the spring commencement.

4. Any member of the faculty who has taught one or more courses during the session is eligible.

5. Nominations for the award, with supporting information, may be submitted in writing by administrators, faculty, or students to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean by April 15 of each year.

6. Criteria by which the recipient is to be selected are:

a. Inspiration of students toward an enthusiastic interest in an academic discipline and in learning in general.

b. Evidence of professional competence in the teacher's field.

c. Interest in the academic and personal welfare of students, both inside and outside the classrooms.
