178.3 Study Carrels in Library

A. Background

Occasionally a faculty member may need space other than one's office for special study, writing, or research.

B. Policy

Six (6) study carrels are available on the second floor of the library for use by faculty members engaged in research and writing. Carrels are not to be used as offices, and the library will not take or deliver messages for faculty using carrels.

C. Guidelines

1. Written application for use of a study carrel should be made to the Chair of the Library Committee before the last Friday in September. The application should describe the work in progress, estimate the time needed to complete the work, and state which term(s) the carrel will be needed. Faculty who are not reapplying for a carrel must remove their personal items from the carrel before the last Friday in September.

2. Assignments of carrels are made once a year by the Library Committee early in October. Assignments may be for Fall, Winter, Spring, and/or Summer terms. Two (2) faculty members may be assigned to each of the two (2) larger carrels.

3. Generally carrels are assigned for no longer than twelve (12) months (October to September) and are renewable only if supply exceeds demand.

4. All library materials in the carrel must be checked out from the Circulation Desk. Items not checked out will be removed.

5. To assure a higher level of security, there is a fifteen dollar ($15) key deposit which is refundable when the key is returned, but forfeited if the key is lost or not returned. When keys are not returned, the lock on the carrel is changed before reassignment. Keys are available from the secretary in the office of the Director of Libraries.

6. While the library takes every reasonable precaution to make sure that carrels are secure, the library cannot assume responsibility for the security of personal items which may be lost or stolen from a carrel. Faculty are advised not to leave items of a valuable or confidential nature in the carrels.
