111.52 Assistant Academic Dean for Undergraduate Research and Internships

 

A. Background

Since 1989, the year in which the first Assistant Academic Dean was appointed, the Associate Academic Dean has been assisted by the Assistant Academic Dean. In 1998, the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean appointed two Assistant Academic Dean, one of whom holds primary responsibility for overseeing administration of undergraduate research and internship programs.

 

B. Policy

The Assistant Academic Dean for Undergraduate Research and Internships is responsible to and assists the Associate Academic Dean.

 

C. Guidelines

The duties and responsibilities of the Assistant Academic Dean for Undergraduate Research and Internships include:

1. Directing the Furman Advantage Program by:

  • Preparing and disseminating information and application forms to faculty and students;
  • Serving as a member of the Furman Advantage Program Committee;
  • Disseminating and collecting evaluation information; and
  • Coordinating the fall recognition dinner for Research Fellows and Interns.

2. Directing the Furman Internship Office within the Johnson Center for Engaged Learning by:

  • Building and maintaining a resource library;
  • Counseling students regarding the process of obtaining an internship;
  • Working with companies and agencies in the creation and/or maintenance of internships;
  • Providing general information sessions for students about internships;
  • Directing the Minority and Hipp Internship programs; and
  • Serving as a resource for faculty in departmental internship programs.

3. Coordinating the Furman Undergraduate Research Program by:

  • Assisting in developing a community of scholars among the faculty and students participating in summer research;
  • Developing activities to enhance the sharing of ideas across academic disciplines;
  • Coordinating travel support for students making presentations at the professional meetings and the National Conference for Undergraduate Research; and
  • Coordinating the research program of the Independent Colleges and Universities of South Carolina for Furman students and faculty.

4. Assisting the Associate Academic Dean by:

  • Assigning new and readmitted students academic advisors;
  • Serving as academic advisor to transfer students who are undecided regarding a major;
  • Counseling students who request a Leave of Absence, and processing their applications; and
  • Processing applications for students applying for readmission.

5. Serving as the facility supervisor for John E. Johns Hall.
