OFFICER AUTHORITY
Public Safety Officers at Furman University receive their law enforcement authority from the State of South Carolina (Title 59, Chapter 116). This law provides campus police officers with law enforcement jurisdiction on the campus at which they are employed and the streets and roads through and contiguous to the campus property. The officers must complete the law enforcement officers certification training at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in Columbia, SC prior to performing police duties just as other law enforcement officers in South Carolina.
Professional Conduct
The Public Safety Staff is committed to providing courteous, excellent service to the Furman community. Your thoughts and comments are very important to us, so please, don't hesitate to contact us. The quality of the service is dependent in part on feedback from the community we serve. The Public Safety Department has an extensive professional standards process in place to respond to citizen complaints and concerns. The department also likes to recognize outstanding performance by our employees.
Please assist us to improve our department by bringing your complaints, compliments and suggestions to the attention of any of the following individuals in a timely manner:
Working Relationships With Law Enforcement Agencies
Furman's Public Safety Department could not complete its mission without the working support of area law enforcement agencies. The campus is in the jurisdiction of the Greenville County Sheriff's Department. The roadways adjacent to the campus are in the jurisdiction of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. You will often see both Greenville County Sheriff's Department Deputies and Troopers from the South Carolina Highway Patrol working at campus athletic events and other activities. The department has also worked with and had the support of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Customs, US Postal Inspectors, U.S. Marshal's Service, and the many local law enforcement agencies throughout the upstate. Periodically, the Public Safety Department will host law enforcement training programs for these various agencies on Furman's campus.
Being Stopped By Furman Police Officers
At some point in your Furman career, you may be stopped and questioned by a Furman Public Safety Officer. This could happen for a variety of reasons:
The officer may be investigating a crime and want to know if you have information that might be helpful or are a witness to that crime.
A crime may have occurred recently and you might resemble the descriptionof the suspect or you may be asked if you have seen the suspect.
A citizen may have made a complaint against you and the officer will be trying to determine if the complaint has merit.
In all cases, if an officer asks you to identify yourself, you are required by Furman University policy to surrender your Furman identification card to any university official including Furman Public Safety Officers. If the officer is investigating a crime or complaint, they may ask reasonable questions to help them determine whether a crime has occurred or a complaint is valid. Refusal to answer questions may prevent an officer from clearing you of suspicion, and can lead to your arrest. If an officer stops you, you should do your best to try to answer the questions the officer poses. If you are being questioned as a suspect in a criminal investigation, the officers are obligated to follow appropriate legal procedures.
If during any encounter with a Furman Public Safety officer, you feel the officer has acted unprofessionally or treated you rudely, see the section of our web site on Professional Conduct for additional information.
