Bicycle Registration
 
    • REGISTRATION
  • All bicycles must be registered with the Public Safety Department.  There is no charge for this registration.  The permit issued to you must be affixed to the bicycle frame in a visible area (i.e. bar under seat).  Failure to register bicycle will result in impoundment, lock will be removed at owner's expense.

  • (The serial number is located on the bike frame, usually under the bicycle pedal sprocket.  You may have to invert your bicycle to see it.)

    • COMPLIANCE WITH STATE LAWS SC State Code 56-5-3430 and SC State Code 56-5-3420
      • Every person riding a bicycle upon a roadway shall be subject to all the duties applicable to the driver of a motor vehicle.
      • Shall operate/ride a bicycle as far to the right side of the roadway as practical, exercising due care when passing a standing motor vehicle or one proceeding in the same direction.
      • Ride in the same direction as motor vehicle traffic.

    • STORAGE OF BICYCLES

    Bicycles are not to be left in public access areas, entrances and exits to buildings, attached to railings at entrances to facilities, in hallways or stairwells.  Bicycle will be impounded and lock removed at owner's expense.

     

    • CAMPUS MALL MAY NOT BE USED BY CYCLISTS TO MAKE REPEATING LAPS.

     

    SMART RULES

     

      1. Ride on the right side of the road
      2. Obey traffic signs and signals.  Yield to pedestrians.
      3. Use hand signals for safety and courtesy.
      4. Stay alert; watch for obstacles and other traffic.
      5. Protect your head. WEAR A HELMET.
      6. Register your bike with Public Safety.
      7. If you are not on it, LOCK IT.  Whether you are using a U-bolt, shackle lock, a cable or a combination of both, lock both wheels and frame to an immovable object/bike rack.
      8. Keep purchase receipts.  Proof of ownership is required to claim unregistered bicycles and to claim bicycles from other law enforcement agencies when the bike is found off campus.
      9. Fix it up.  Make sure your bicycle is adjusted properly.  Check brakes before riding.  Remove any accessories not needed.
