Faculty Positions NOTICE OF FACULTY VACANCY POSITION: CONDUCTOR OF CHORAL MUSIC Coordinator of Choral Activities QUALIFICATIONS: An experienced, outstanding conductor and teacher with an earned doctorate or demonstrated professional equivalency; demonstrated success in college teaching, program development, student recruitment, and community outreach. RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will have overall responsibility for the choral components of the vocal arts program. He or she will conduct the Furman Singers and will be directly involved in recruitment for all choral ensembles. Other duties will include teaching conducting, choral literature, and other topics based on qualifications, experience, and departmental need. These courses might include studio voice, choral methods, diction and pedagogy. In addition to the scores of graduates in prestigious positions as choral musicians in colleges, churches and schools, the names of Furman alumni will be found on the rosters of opera houses throughout the country and abroad. Furman presents fully staged operas and choral/orchestral programs that provide student solo opportunities. The Furman Singers is the primary touring ensemble of the vocal arts program. Created in 1947, it has had only two conductors, the late DuPre Rhame, and since 1970, Bingham L. Vick, Jr. Under Dr. Vick?s leadership the Singers have appeared at state, regional and national conferences of the MENC and the ACDA. They have taken a weeklong tour of the eastern United States each year, and have toured abroad every other year. Furman Singers enjoy tremendous community and alumni support, and is viewed as one of Furman?s most effective ambassadors. GENERAL INFORMATION: Furman University is an independent, primarily undergraduate liberal arts institution with a highly selective admissions policy. Founded in 1826, it occupies a beautiful, modern campus and has an enrollment of 2,500 students. The Department of Music, accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music since 1937, has twenty full-time, twenty-two adjunct and part-time faculty members, and approximately 180 music majors. The department offers the Bachelor of Music degree in Performance, Theory, Church Music and Music Education, as well as the Bachelor of Arts degree in Music.
