FRENCH INSTRUCTOR/ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
Two-year position, beginning August 2008, with possibility of converting to tenure track. Salary competitive. Specialization in 20th century/contemporary literature. Native/near native fluency in French required. The position emphasizes language teaching at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced intermediate levels. Other responsibilities of French faculty may include: directing the study away program in Versailles; supervising the French Language House; teaching in the first-year seminar program. Furman expects a strong commitment to and excellence in undergraduate teaching, but places high value on scholarship and professional development as well.

PHILOSOPHY
Assistant Professor, full time, tenure track. We have one position to fill, but we are searching under two quite different descriptions. Applications from persons who fit EITHER description are welcome. First description: AOS: Chinese Philosophy and/or Indian Philosophy. AOC: Logic. Second description: AOS: Contemporary Metaphysics/Epistemoloy. AOC: Logic and Philosophy of Science. Undergraduate department; eight permanent faculty; 60 plus philosophy majors; commitment to excellence in both teaching and scholarship; salary and benefits competitive.

BRITISH HISTORY
The Department of History at Furman University invities applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship in 18th or 19th-century Britain, with research specialization in either industrialization or imperialism. A secondary specialty in French history is preferred.
Applicants should have completed their Ph.D. by the start of the appointment , in Fall 2008. Furman operates on a semester system, with a five-course teaching load for the year. The successful candidate will normally teach a freshman seminar, two European surveys, and two upper-level courses in his or her fields of specialization. The department values excellence in teaching and active scholarship.

ISLAMIC WORLD
The Department of History at Furman University invities applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship in the history of the Islamic world to begin in Fall, 2008. Chronological and geographical focus remain open, but the department is particularly interested in a candidate with a specialization in the pre-modern era with a demonstraed capacity to teach the modern era.
The normal teaching load is five courses; two introductory surveys and two upper divisions, both in the candidate's field, and one freshman seminar of the candidate's design in Furman's campus-wide freshman seminar program. The department values excellence in teaching and active scholarship.
The successful applicant will be expected to have a Ph.D. in hand by Fall, 2008.

MUSIC
Artist/Teacher of Percussion
QUALIFICATIONS: Earned doctorate or demonstrated professional equivalency; evidence of excellence in teaching and success in student recruiting, and a record of significant professional activity.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Teach applied percussion and direct a successful and growing percussion program, conduct percussion ensembles, and coordinate percussion assignments for large ensembles; secondary emphasis on drum set is desirable. The successful candidate will be an outstanding, active performer, and will be expected to perform regularly both on and off campus as a soloist and collaborator. Other duties, based on qualifications and departmental needs, could include developing and teaching courses in world music.
RANK: Open, tenure eligible, salary and rank based on qualifications and experience.
APPOINTMENT DATE: August 1, 2008

GENERAL INFORMATION: Furman University is an independent, primarily undergraduate liberal arts institution with a highly selective admissions policy.
