Job Descriptions Title: Assistant Academic Dean for the Center for Teaching and Engaged Learning The Assistant Academic Dean for the Center for Teaching and Engaged Learning (CTEL) is an administrative position responsible for overseeing and directing all functions of the Center for Teaching and Engaged Learning (CTEL), including instructional design, faculty development, collaborative learning, and curricular research and development. The Assistant Academic Dean for CTEL reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and provides the vision and leadership for the strategic development and the coordination of CTEL resources and services to support the academic program. The position requires an earned doctorate or terminal degree, at least three years of full-time, college-level teaching as a ranked faculty member, and two years of experience with budgets and directing staff. The successful candidate must demonstrate knowledge of current issues, research, and innovations in liberal learning, in instructional technologies and pedagogies for the liberal arts, and of programs and initiatives to create a nurturing learning environment in support of faculty and student development. Function: Oversees and directs all functions of the Center for Teaching and Engaged Learning (CTEL), including instructional development and technologies, faculty development, curricular research and development, and collaborative learning. The Assistant Academic Dean for CTEL provides the vision and leadership for the strategic development and the coordination of CTEL resources and services to support the academic program. Responsibilities: 1. Develops and articulates a mission, vision, and strategic plan for CTEL in consultation with CTEL staff, the Coordinating Committee, and others. 2. Establishes goals and priorities for internal operations and implementations and assures that these match with institutional goals and priorities and CTEL vision and mission. 3. Establishes and monitors goals for CTEL: a. with the Chief Information Officer (CIO), for integration of technology and communication multimedia within courses and research to achieve pedagogical goals. b. with the Faculty Development Committee, for faculty development programs and initiatives to enhance teaching and learning in a liberal arts environment and to nurture faculty at all stages of the career cycle; c. with the appropriate committees, to encourage, foster, and support faculty in curricular development and SoTL (Scholarship of Teaching and Learning) research. 4. Establishes and implements a mechanism of CTEL program and resource assessment and reporting to provide a continual means of measurement and improvement. 5. Consults with academic departments and individual faculty to understand academic needs in curriculum, teaching, technology, and engaged learning, and facilitates effective response through resources, planning, and expertise. 6. Maintains and provides timely and accurate information regarding CTEL to faculty, staff, and students; provides timely and accurate information regarding institutional and administrative concerns to CTEL staff. 7. Meets with the Computing & Information Systems (C&IS) Directors and CIO on a regular basis to ensure coordination of resources and clarification of roles in supporting use of technology and media in CTEL and the academic programs. 8. Represents CTEL in administrative and faculty groups and committees. 9. Supervises direct reports; conducts annual performance evaluations for the Instructional Development Consultants (IDCs). 10. Manages the operating budget and grant funds (both internal and external [e.g., grants received and administered by CTEL]), policies, staffing, professional development, quality of service and the overall performance of CTEL. 11. Identifies and develops outside funding opportunities related to teaching and learning in conjunction with the Grants Office and the Development Office. 12. Serves as a liaison with other teaching and learning centers to encourage productive interinstitutional collaborations. 13. Teaches as appropriate and feasible. Qualifications: Required 1. Earned doctorate or terminal degree (academic discipline open) 2. A minimum of three years of full-time, college-level teaching as a ranked faculty member 3. A minimum of two years of experience with budgets and directing staff 4. Knowledge and understanding of current issues, research, innovations, and scholarship in teaching and liberal learning 5. Knowledge of the use of current technologies in creative teaching and learning in the liberal arts 6. Knowledge of programs and initiatives to promote faculty development 7. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills 8. Ability to think creatively and to demonstrate creative problem solving 9. Ability to create a supportive and nurturing learning environment and to cultivate collegiality Highly desirable 10. Experience and expertise in faculty development 11. A record of scholarly publication 12. Experience in teaching and/or supporting faculty at a small, liberal-arts institution 13. Knowledge of and expertise in theories and methods of classroom assessment and evaluation 14. Experience directing, coordinating, or teaching in a successful Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) program 15. Interdisciplinary teaching experience | |||
