Reading
is Fundamental At the Kappa Kappa Gamma National Convention in June 2004, the first National Philanthropy was selected: Reading is Fundamental, Inc., the nation's oldest and largest nonprofit children's literacy organization. In 1966, former teacher Margaret McNamara brought a bag of used books to four boys in Washington,D.C., whom she tutored in reading. When she told the children they could each pick a book to keep, their astonishment and delight led her to discover that these children, and many of their classmates, had never owned any books. On November 3, 1966, after gathering volunteers, Mrs. McNamara launched the book distribution and reading motivation program they called Reading is Fundamental. Today, RIF operates through 450,000 volunteers at 25,000 sites nationwide. RIF programs annually serve 5.1 million children of all ages, most of whom are at risk of educational failure, with a focus on those from birth to age 11. Supported by the US Department of Education, corporations, foundations, community organizations, and individuals, RIF has provided more than 265 million books since 1966 for children to choose and keep. Kappa Kappa Gamma is glad to be a part of such a successful and meaningful organization. We look forward to helping out in the Greenville community this year and for years to come. For more information on RIF, please visit their site at RIF.org. Rose McGill Fund ![]() "No Kappa sister should suffer in times of financial distress." The Rose McGill Fund was created in 1922 to help Kappa sisters and their families in times of need. Through donations and the purchase of magazine subscriptions, the Fund is able to give financial support to sisters who need help. During the holiday season, Kappa chapters can also help a family, whom they only know on a first-name basis. Between 2000 and 2002, over $545,140 in support was given thanks to the Rose McGill Fund. Bobby Pearse Community Center Each week, Kappas go to Bobby Pearse, an afterschool program for underpriviledged children to provide them with pizza donated by Pizza hut, help with homework, and have fun! Loaves and Fishes Loaves and Fishes is an organization that rescues excess perishable food from local businesses and delivers it to organizations that help people in need. Kappa helps out by holding a canned food drive in the fall and a volleyball tournament in the spring, with an entry fee of canned goods for each team.
