National History

Alpha Delta Pi was founded on May 15, 1851, at Wesleyan Female College in Macon, Georgia. The original name of the sorority was the "Adelphean Society." The word "Adelphean" is derived from the Greek word meaning sister. We hold the distinction of being the FIRST secret society in the world for college women and is regarded as the "First and Finest. As the mother of today's sorority system, it is only fitting that our founding took place at the first college in the world chartered to grant degrees to women. Our name changed to Alpha Delta Phi in 1905 when the sorority went national. However, because of continued confusion with a men's fraternity with the same name, it was changed for the last time to Alpha Delta Pi in 1913. We take much pride in the fact that principles and rituals of Alpha Delta Pi are the same as that of our founders in 1851. The qualifications for membership in this sorority have remained unchanged through the years ~ scholarship, high principles of behavior, and true friendships. Local History

On September 24, 1981, the Delphian Society became one of the three original women's social clubs at Furman University. Katherine Andrus and Karen Abbey laid the foundations for the society, with many of the symbols and ideals bearing strong resemblance to those of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. Eighteen Delphian charter members established the society based on the qualities of scholarship, leadership, service, character and sisterhood.

On March 19, 1994, the Delphian Society became the Eta Phi chapter of Alpha Delta Pi. The sisters made a smooth transition into Alpha Delta Pi by continuing to uphold the Delphian foundations of leadership, loyalty, friendship and Christian ideals.

Eta Phi has grown over the past years to include 106 active members, making us one of the largest sororities on campus. Our sisters participate in a wide range of campus activities such as O-Staff, SAC, Mock Trial, WFTV, Panhellenic Executive Council, Music Ensembles, Varsity Athletics, various religious organizations and numerous academic societies.

The sisters of Eta Phi compete in Furman University Intramural Sports, get involved in competitions like Homecoming, and get together for weekly Bible studies if interested. In addition, the sisters enjoy social events including sisterhood retreats, formals and semi-formals, informal date functions like Mallard Ball & 80’s Prom, and congregate for weekly chapter meetings.
