Duties
of AED Officers and Chairs
The officers and
committee chairs provide guidance, direction, and leadership for
the chapter, promoting the objectives of the Society as stated
in the Constitution. No chapter is better than its leadership,
so a group of capable, sincere, and responsible officers is essential
for an active and useful chapter.

PRESIDENT
- Meets
with outgoing president to set up agenda for first officers'
meeting after elections
- Makes
sure each new officer and chair meets with their predecessor
to insure a good transition
- Presides
over at least one officers' meeting in Spring Term to plan for
Fall
- Accumulates
a list of officers' summer e-mails, phone numbers, and addresses
and provides it to all officers and advisors
- In
May, delgates tasks involved with Planning Guide, Plant Sale,
Health Career Registration, Freshman Picnic, and Buddy System
- Gives
introductory speech about AED to freshman at Orientation Health
Careers meeting in September
- Makes
sure an officers' meeting is held at least once a month
- Organizes
chapter attendance to National and State AED conventions
- Makes
sure that planning and ritual practice take place for the Initiation
Ceremony and Banquet
- Makes
sure elections are held within 1-3 weeks of the Spring National
or State Convention
VICE
PRESIDENT
- Functions
in absence of the president
- Keeps
track of point system for honor cords
- Organizes
the externship program for Christmas and Summer
- Serves
as liason to Furman's Office of Educational Services, which
runs the Mentorship program
- Coordinates
Mock Interviews for Seniors early in the Fall (begin planning
in Spring and Summer)
SECRETARY
- Maintains official minutes
of all chapter meetings in Chapter Minute Book, and distributes
them promptly to all officers and chairs
- Maintains Chapter Roll
Book and email distribution lists of all associate and full
members
- Sends chapter E-mails
of upcoming events as needed
- Signs completed membership
form for all new members & forwards with membership fees
to the National Office
- Forwards nominations
for honorary members to National Office for approval
- Maintains a file of all
completed membership records returned to the chapter
- Distributes membership
packets
- Provides National Office
with names and addresses of chapter officers
- Provides National Office
with number of Scalpels and AED newsletters needed
- Provides National Office
with list of members entering professional schools
TREASURER
- Maintains accurate account
of all financial transactions using Financial Record Book
- Collects all membership
fees and chapter dues
- Pays all expenses
- Has Financial Records
Book audited at end of his or her term
- Provides Secretary with
check for total membership fees
- Clears signatures and
title of chapter account with bank when new treasurer is elected
- Creates budget for national
and state conventions
HISTORIAN
- Maintains an updated
summary of all chapter activities and programs for the Biennial
chapter report
- Writes, assembles, and
submits Biennial Chapter Report to National Convention
- Cooperates with Vice-President
in maintaining chapter scrapbook and other historical records
- Puts chapter charter
and awards on display at appropriate times in appropriate areas,
especially at the Initiation Ceremony
REPORTER
- Reports to the editor
of the Scalpel all chapter news (letters, articles, reports
and lectures) at least once a year
- Strives to make new items
interesting and original
- Solicits articles for
chapter newsletters from members
BLOOD
DRIVE
- Contacts the appropriate
person in Furman's Office of Student Services about the dates
for the blood drive
- Coordinates details of
blood drive with blood bank personnel
- Organizes volunteers
to staff blood drive
- Coordinates blood drive
publicity with Publicity chair
PROGRAMS
- Makes arrangements for
speakers and programs
- Plans for introduction
of speakers and any recognition for speakers
- Provides information
on programs for AED newsletter
- Coordinates honoraria,
travel costs, and appreciation gifts with Treasurer
PUBLICITY
- Creatively coordinates
publicity of AED events, fundraisers, and speakers
- Insures that new members'
pictures are taken at Initiation
- Responsible to update
displays in the two bulletin boards outside of the library in
Plyler hall.
EDITOR
- Oversees creation, publication,
and distribution of the monthly AED newsletter to all members
SERVICE
- Responsible for contacting
service organizations and for organizing service projects in
which AED can serve the campus as well as the Greenville community.
- Plans monthly service
activities
FUNDRAISING
- Proposes and executes
ideas for raising funds, especially the annual plant sale and
Kaplan diagnostic tests
- Funds are raised to cover
chapter operating expenses, convention travel costs, and the
chapter scholarship
SOCIAL
- Makes arrangements for
appropriate refreshments at picnics, meetings, and banquets
- Makes sure that grills,
ice cream makers, tables and chairs are available when needed
- Coordinates Initiation
Banquet menu with Catering Services
- Creates name tags for
head table at Initiation Banquet
NOMINATIONS
- Provides a slate of candidates
for election of officers and committee chairpersons
- Conducts the election
process
- Chairs the selection
process for choosing the chapter's nominee for the national,
regional, and chapter AED scholarships
WEBSITE
- Updates the chapter's
web site by entering the calendar of events, meeting agendas,
minutes, officers' names, membership lists, and other pertinent
information.
- Insures that the site
is working properly, working with Furman Computer and Information
Services if necessary
- Obtains digital pictures
to include in web site
- Encourages members to
use and contribute to the web site
