Student's Career Roadmap
 
Each year of college offers new opportunities to develop one's level of career preparedness.  Here is a "Roadmap" of career-related activities to help keep your career planning on track:

FRESHMEN
  1. Get acclimated to Furman University and to Greenville.
  2. Get involved in campus activities/organizations.
  3. Talk to students majoring in your areas of interest.
  4. Study the catalog to determine course requirements for majors you are considering.
  5. Take the career interest inventories available in the Career Services Office.
  6. Participate in the Shadow Program. Meet and spend a day with someone employed in a career field you are considering.
  7. Take a variety of classes and stay open-minded about your choice of major.
  8. Become familiar with services and resources provided by the Office of Career Services.

SOPHOMORES

  1. Get prepared to choose a major by the time you have completed 70 academic hours.
  2. Pay special attention to the courses you like the most, are the most successful in and feel the most comfortable in.
  3. Talk to students majoring in areas you are seriously considering.
  4. Talk to faculty members in the academic majors you are considering.
  5. Visit the Office of Career Services to get information on what you can do with specific majors.
  6. Take the career interest inventories available in the Career Services Office if you haven't already done so. 
  7. Explore the Individualized Curriculum Program (ICP) if you are interested in creating your own major.
  8. Participate in the Shadow Program. Meet and spend a day with someone employed in a career field you are considering.
  9. Continue involvement in campus activities/organizations.
  10. Prepare to do a summer job/internship that will help you clarify your career goals.

JUNIORS

  1. Begin exploring how to implement your major in the world-of-work.
  2. Choose elective courses that support potential career paths.
  3. Participate in an internship, either for academic credit or on your own, that will enable you to gain career-related work experience.
  4. Participate in the Shadow Program. Meet and spend a day with someone employed in a career field you are considering.
  5. Participate in the Preparing for Graduate School series of workshops.
  6. Use Optimal Resume to develop your resume and familiarize yourself with the Furman MonsterTRAK system.
  7. Conduct informational interviews to gather information about career fields and to create a network of contacts. Use the Career Link  program to assist you.
  8. Make an appointment with a staff member in the Office of Career Services if you have questions or to discuss your individual situation.

SENIORS

  1. Assemble your interview attire.
  2. Attend the required Campus Recruiting workshop.
  3. Research prospective employers.
  4. Attend a Job Search Strategies workshop hosted by the Office of Career Services.
  5. Participate in a Mock Interview.
  6. Update your resume in the Furman MonsterTRAK system.
  7. Participate in the Shadow Program.
  8. Attend Resume Writing and Interviewing Tips workshops.
  9. Attend the Reality 101 seminar for seniors transitioning from college to the world-of-work.
  10. Network, network, network!!!!!
  11. Conduct informational interviews with professionals who work in career areas you are considering. Use Career Link  to identify prospective contacts.
  12. Participate in the Independent Colleges and Universities Interview Day. Visit Career Services Office for more information
  13. Make an appointment with a staff member in the Office of Career Services if you have questions or to discuss your individual situation.
