Furman University Profile

Furman University is a private, coeducational liberal arts college located on a beautiful campus in Greenville, South Carolina. Founded in 1826, the college moved to Greenville in 1851. It became coeducational in 1933 when it was coordinated with the Greenville Woman's College, which had been chartered in 1854. In the late 1950's, the college moved to a new campus on the out-skirts of the city.

Furman is increasingly recognized for its excellent academic program, outstanding faculty/staff and superb facilities. In 1973, it joined the select group of colleges that qualify for chapters of Phi Beta Kappa.   One of four colleges with annual funding from The Duke Endowment, Furman has been awarded grants from such leading foundations as the National Endowment for the Humanities, National Science Foundation, Dana Foundation, Mellon Foundation and Dreyfus Foundation.

The academic calendar consists of three terms, beginning in early September and concluding late May. During the fall and spring 12-week terms, students concentrate on three courses; during the 8-week winter term, they take two. Also, a two-term summer session is offered. Courses carry four semester hours of credit.

Approximately 2,600 undergraduates attend Furman University with over 90% living on campus. Students come from nearly every state and many foreign countries. Students can participate in over 120 campus organizations, including nine fraternities and eight sororities. Other popular organizations include music ensembles, dramatic productions, publications, religious organizations and a nationally renowned volunteer service corps.
