About the Campbell Scholars
The Campbell Scholar program began in the fall of 2000 with five students from Clemson University and four students from Furman University. The new scholarship program provides community service in the area of youth development. Betsy Campbell said, "Our goal is to help young people teach each other values, attitudes, and skills that will enable each of them to contribute to their communities."
The scholars participated in an orientation that defined community service within their role as a Campbell Scholar at Clemson University and Furman University. In return for their scholarship each student gave ten hours of service to learning about their community through the education of youth. They engaged in direct contact with younger students for six hours per week. The other four hours were reserved for reflection, journaling, and discussion witht eh coordinator or in other service learning activities.
