The Office of Multicultural Affairs strives to improve the quality of life at Furman
by implementing comprehensive educational and cultural services that promote
multicultural awareness and respect for diversity.



Multicultural Orientation Program
Students gain an introduction to life at Furman from a minority perspective.

Legacies -- Peer
Mentor
Program
Freshmen are assigned upper-class mentors who assist with the transition from high school to college
by helping them become oriented (physically and socially) to the Furman community and by providing support,
assistance and advice in regard to academic matters.

Faculty/Staff
Mentor
Program
Students are assigned to a faculty or staff member who provides support, leadership and guidance.
Mentors also assist with establishing connections to the
Greenville community.

Bi-Monthly Newsletter
Students receive information about current events and opportunities for scholarships,
fellowships and internships for minorities.

Multicultural Senior Banquet
Students are recognized for outstanding scholastic achievement,
community service and leadership at a spring banquet.
 


Multicultural Student Weekend
Students accepted for admission to Furman enjoy an extensive look at
Furman during this activity-filled weekend.

Holiday
Dinner
Multicultural students enjoy "home cooked" meal prepared by faculty/staff.  


MLK Celebration

Annual celebration of the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. includes
formal program, lectures, and community service.


 

Heritage Tour
 
The Heritage Tour is an annual tour of many civil rights movement sites.
 Diversity Training
The office sponsors a number of programs that promote greater understanding of other cultures. They include:
  • Building Community Through Unity. Through this one-day workshop, modeled after a program sponsored by the National Coalition Building Institute,

participants become aware of misinformation about particular groups and learn to break down barriers between groups.

  • The Inclusive Leader. Participants learn the principles of inclusive leadership and the skills necessary to become an inclusive leader.
  • Walk a Mile in My Shoes. Participants explore the meaning of diversity and discuss ways to creat a more accepting campus community
