Student Organizations

Furman has more than 145 student organizations, including social, recreational, religious, professional, honorary and special interest groups. These organizations are open to all students, and many promote education or knowledge of a particular culture or interest.

 Organizations at Furman include:

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (AKA)

In 1908, AKA became America's first Greek-letter organization established by and for black women.
AKA cultivates and encourages high scholastic and ethical standards, promotes unity and friendship among college women,
and provides community service in the
Greenville area. The Rho Zeta chapter was chartered at Furman in 1994.

Association of Students Interested in Asia (ASIA)

ASIA focuses on educating the campus about Asian culture and offers students an outlet to share their own cultural experiences.

Delta Sigma Theta

Delta Sigma Theta was established in 1913. Furman Deltas are members of the Xi Iota city-wide chapter based in Spartanburg. Delta Sigma Theta draws on the collective strength of college women to promote academic excellence, community service and cultural enrichment. The organization promotes community service, economic development, educational development, housing and urban development, and mental health.

    Furman University Gospel Ensemble (FUGE)

FUGE is a nondenominational organization whose purpose is to sing Christian songs in the African tradition. The choir performs on campus and in area churches, while promoting religious and cultural awareness.

Furman University International Students Association (FUISA)

FUISA works to orient international students to college life in the
United States by providing a network and an opportunity for students of different nationalities to meet and exchange ideas.

Kappa Alpha Psi was founded in 1911 at Indiana University and was organized on the Furman campus in the spring of 1994. The fraternity promotes the values of honor and patriotism and enhances the personal growth and development of its members through leadership preparation and encouragement to achieve.

    Paladin S.E.A.R.C.H.

The Students Exploring and Researching Careers in Health Club provides health care resources (field trips to medical schools, Diagnostic MCATs, internships, scholarships, health care conferences) to students of all ethnic groups, especially women and minorities, who are traditionally underrepresented in the health care professions. Paladin S.E.A.R.C.H. is affiliated with the Greenville Hospital System's Area Health Education Center (AHEC) program.

Student League for Black Culture (SLBC)

The purpose of SLBC is to encourage black awareness and educate others about black culture by bringing to campus individuals and groups who have made significant contributions to the enhancement of black awareness. SLBC encourages the social and cultural interaction of black students at the university by sponsoring black-oriented activities, and it strives to serve as a liaison between the black communities of Greenville and surrounding areas and the black student community at Furman. In addition, SLBC endeavors to improve the general well-being of the black community at Furman while promoting and encouraging racial interaction, sensitivity and harmony.

SLBC members participate in community service projects through the Collegiate Educational Service Corps (CESC). Through its newsletter, The River, SLBC informs members and alumni of events and issues relevant to black life at Furman.
