Roxanne Chase, Graphic Designer
During my fine art/architecture studies at the Cooper Union I took a summer
job as assistant to the production manager and art director at a New York publishing
firm. About a month into the job, the art director quit unexpectedly . . . an
act which catapulted me into a high-end commercial art career at age twenty.
To survive crushing deadlines and my own ignorance, I enlisted the aid of New
York’s finest illustrators, designers, photographers and copywriters.
Four of these heroes adopted me, ferrying me to the shores of enlightenment
through apprenticeships.
After our first child was born, my husband and I hopped a freighter for Greece
where we summered in Santorini and wintered in Thessaloniki. I studied various
painting techniques, eventually becoming a reverse-glass painter, as well as
a partner in a creative workshop.
I came to the US in 1984 for the opening of an exhibit of my paintings at the
Midtown Gallery in Washington, D.C. and settled in South Carolina where my parents
and brother had recently relocated. Here I worked as a staff designer/illustrator
for a local newspaper and founded a graphic design studio, Art á la Carte.
Furman, a client, offered me a staff position in 2001.
