Leadership > About Harry B. Shucker

The Shucker Leadership Institute at Furman is named in honor of Dr. Harry B.
Shucker, who spent 40 years on staff at Furman, 22 of those as vice
president for student services.
These programs reflect
Shucker’s belief that leadership is action, not just a
position of power. "The best leaders are those who provide
opportunities for others to develop their own potential through working
toward a common goal that benefits the greater Furman and Greenville
communities.”
His servant leader approach involved providing
the necessary resources to help students and professional colleagues
attain their own successes and leadership positions in campus life and
in the work place.
Each year, the Harry B. Shucker Outstanding Student Leader Award is presented
to a senior student who has exemplified a commitment to impacting
others and effecting positive change at Furman.
