The German foreign study program is administered by Furman University in cooperation with the Academy for International Education in Bonn. Any student who has completed Furman’s 21-level course in German or the equivalent before September is eligible to apply. The cost of the program includes tuition for three courses, round-trip transportation from a designated point of departure in the United States (usually Atlanta), housing with German families in Bonn during the academic portion of the program, meals with the families (which does not usually include lunch) public transportation in Bonn, costs of structured touring. Not included in the cost of the program are independent travel on weekends and during the optional 10 days at the end of the program. Dr. Jane Chew and Dr. Norman Whisnant of the Furman German Staff serve as resident directors of the program in Germany. Students take 3 courses and one must be in German. Independent study and private music lessons are also possible if prior arrangements can be worked out with professors and instructors. Students interested in these should see the Director immediately. Courses usually offered during the Bonn program include: German 49 German Language (in German) German 50 Fine Arts course (in English) German 54 German Drama (in German) History 38 History of the German People (in English) In the past, German 50 has carried fine arts general education credit, and German 54 and History 38 carry upper-level humanities credit for non-German and/or non-history majors. |
