                                                  INTRAMURAL SPORTS RULES

 

BASKETBALL

 

     Competition:  Round Robin Tournament 

     Rules:  NCAA rules govern all play with the following exceptions: Each half is 20 minutes long but clock does not stop in the 1st half (except time outs) and stops only the last two minutes of the 2nd half.  Each team allowed two time outs per game.  In case of a tie after regulation play, a five minute overtime period will be played.  A subsequent tie will be continued on a sudden death basis - the team scoring four  points first will be the winner.  All technical fouls and flagrant fouls are two points plus ball possession. The green scorecard is the official score. 

 

BASKETBALL FREE-THROW

 

     Competition:  One day event.  Individual or team.  To be eligible for team score, a team must have at least 5 players.  Each organization will be allowed to enter a maximum of 12 participants.

 

     Rules:  The first round will consist of 25 free throws.  Only those men scoring 20/25 and those women scoring 15/25 and over are eligible for individual competition.  Two practice shots may be taken at the start of each round.  The individual winner is the one who makes the most out of 50.  The team championship will be based on the first round scores (top 5 scores).  The individual man and woman with the highest number made out of 50 will score 10 bonus points for his/her team.

 

BASKETBALL GOLF

 

     Competition:  One day event.  Individual or team.  To be eligible for team score, a team must have at least 5 players.  Each organization will be allowed to enter a maximum of 12 participants.

 

     Rules:  Each individual must shoot the required shot at 18 different stations.  Par for each shot will be determined by difficulty of shot.  You may not score more than 2 over par for each shot.  The individual man and woman with the lowest score will score 10 points for his/ her team.

 

BOWLING

 

     Competition:  Round Robin Tournament 

     Rules:  Each team will compete with three individuals.  ABC rules apply.  Each person will pay for their own games.   The individual man and woman with the highest individual score and the highest 3-game series will score 10 points for his/ her team.  Games are played  at Brunswick Bowl, Wade Hampton Blvd.

 

CROSS COUNTRY

 

     Competition:  One day event.  Individual or team.  To be eligible for team score, a team must have at least 5 runners.

 

     Rules:  Each contestant will run a pre-determined 2.5 mile course.  Maps are available at the Recreational Sports Office.  Each contestant will be assigned a number.  The individual

man and woman with the fastest times will score 10 bonus points for his/her team.

 

FLAG FOOTBALL

    

     Competition:  Round Robin Tournament 

     Rules:  NCAA rules will apply with the following exceptions: 

     8 players play at a time.  Only the center needs to be on the line of scrimmage.  Only 1 player may be in motion at a time.  23 minute halves - continuous clock, however, the timer may stop the clock if there is a delay in the game because the ball goes out of play.  1 time-out per half.  4 downs to score.  Play starts from the 20 yard line.  Unlimited number of forward passes on each play.  Every player is eligible to receive pass.  There are no fumbles or punts.  If a pass is incomplete, the new line of scrimmage is at the point where the pass is thrown.  If a ball is lateraled or thrown backwards and dropped, the line of scrimmage is where the ball hits the ground.  There is no contact allowed.  An incomplete pass from the end zone is a safety.  If a player catches a ball without a flag belt on the ball is dead at the point of the reception.  After each TD an official will pull the scorers flag belt off to insure it is not tied on (if requested).  If the flag belt is removed before a referee has time to check it, the TD will not count and the down will be played over.  The center must hike or side hike the ball to another player before regaining possession of the ball.  All receivers must be inside the line judges.  The P.A.T. is worth 2 pts. and the defensive team can score off the P.A.T (also 2 pts.).   Anyone in possession of the ball with their shirt hanging out over the flag belt is downed at that spot.

           The following penalty is marked from the spot of the pass:

           Defensive pass interference                       spot ball at fouls unless over 15 yds  
                                                                 
then you spot 15 yds away - all 1st downs

           All penalties should be marked from the spot where they will penalize the offending team the most.

 

FRISBEE

 

     Competition:  One day event.  Individual or team.  To be eligible for team score, a team must have at least 5 players.  Each organization will be allowed a maximum of 12 participants.

 

     Rules:  Tournament will consist of accuracy and distance events.  Accuracy:  1 point for each disc through the hoop from specific distances.  Distance:  Farthest distance, within boundaries.  Each participant must use a frisbee supplied by the Recreational Sports Department.  The man and woman overall champion will score 10 bonus points for his/her

team.

  

GOLF

 

     Competition:  One day event.  Individual or team.  To be eligible for team score, a team must

have at least 4 players.  Each organization will be allowed a maximum of 8 players.

 

     Rules:  USGA and local course rules govern play.  Medal play.  The individual man with the

lowest score earns 10 points towards their team's totals.

 

HOME RUN DERBY

 

     Competition:  One day event.  Individual or team.  To be eligible for team score, a team must

have at least 5 players.  Each organization will be allowed a maximum of 12 participants.

 

     Rules:  Each participant will have 12 pitches in which to hit 10.  Each participant must supply

a pitcher.  The softballs will be provided by the Recreational Sports Department. The individual

man and woman with the most home runs earns10 points towards their team's totals. 

            

ROWING

 

     Competition:  One day event.  Individual or team.  To be eligible for team score, men must

have at least 4 rowers in each weight class (165< - over 165).  Women must have 5 rowers. 

Each organization will be allowed a maximum of 8 per weight class.

 

     Rules:  Each competitor will row 2000 meters for time.

 

SOCCER

 

     Competition:  Round Robin Tournament

 

     Rules:  11 play at a time.  Two 20 minute halves, continuous clock, no time outs. The

timer may stop the clock if there is a delay in the game because the ball goes out of play. 

Overtime (only in playoffs).  5 minutes, after that, each team alternates 5 penalty kicks.  Each

penalty kick must be taken by different players. USSF rules will govern all play with the

exception - there is no offsides.  

 

SOFTBALL

 

     Competition:  Round Robin Tournament 

 

     Rules:  ASA rules will govern play with the following exceptions:

No metal spikes allowed.  60 minute time limit.  If a team is up by 15 runs or more after 4 innings

 the game will be called.  All starters are allowed 1 re-entry  to the same position and same place

in the batting order.  Count - 3 balls, 1 strike.  Pitch must have 3' - 12' arc limit from point of

release.

 

SOFTBALL (CO-REC)

 

     Competition:  Round Robin Tournament 

 

     Rules:  Same as slow pitch.  Also, 5 men and 5 women play at a time.  3 men and 3 women

must be in the infield and 2 men and 2 women must be in the outfield.  Must alternate batting

order.  No bunting or sliding.  Each results in an automatic out.


SPADES

      Competition:  Round Robin Tournament


       Rules:  Each team will have 5 pairs of players.  The team that wins 2 out of 3 (or all 3) games will win the match.  Play is to 500 points.  If a team accumulates 10 "bags" 100 points will be subtracted from their total.  A player may bid nil (100 points) or blind nil (200 points).  The 2 of clubs leads first, however the other players do not have to play their lowest club.


SPORTS TRIVIA

      Competition:  One day event.  Individual or team competition.  A team may have up to four

 participants; however, there is no limit to the number of teams an organization may enter. 

 

      Rules:  Each individual/team will be given 1 hour to answer the sports trivia questions.

 SWIMMING

     Competition:  One day event.  Competition will be on an individual basis.  To be eligible for

team points, each team must have at least 6 different swimmers.

     Rules: Each team may enter 2 persons in each event.  Each person may enter two events and

 one relay race.

 

     Events:    50 free         50 back         50 breast          50 fly         100 IM         100 free

                   200 m relay                       200 free relay

     Scoring awarded on the following scale:

                           1st            2nd          3rd           4th

              Relay    10              6              4              1


TEAM HANDBALL

       Competition:  Round Robin tournament

       Rules:


TENNIS

 

     Competition:  Round Robin Tournament 

 

     Rules:  Each team must have at least 5 different players.  There will be 5 singles matches. 

Each match will be one set.  In case of a tie at six games all, use the 7 point tie-breaker to decide

the winner.  USTA  rules will govern all play.  Each participant must furnish own equipment.

Please put best player in the #1 position, etc.  Each team must submit an order of play before the

first match to include all players.   If inequities are deemed by the Recreational Sports staff

concerning a team?s order of line-up, the team in question will forfeit the match.

 

TRACK

 

     Competition:  One day event.  Competition will be on an individual basis.  To be eligible for

team points, each team must have at least 6 participants.  

    

     Rules: Each team may enter two people in each event.  Each person may enter 2 events and

1 relay race.  No metal spikes allowed.

     Events:  100         440         880         mile         long jump          100 hurdles

                  mile relay         440 relay

     Scoring awarded on the following scale:

                           1st            2nd          3rd           4th

       Individual      5               3              2              1

              Relay    10              6              4              1



ULTIMATE FRISBEE


       Competition:  Round Robin play.


       Rules:


VOLLEYBALL

 

     Competition:  Round Robin Tournament 

     Rules:  USVBA rules will govern all play with the following exceptions:

     A match will consist of  first team to 40 points.  A team plays with 6 players, but may start

and finish with 5 players.  Replay when ball hits black basketball framework.  If a player plays

the ball into the backboard on purpose, do not replay the point.  Do not replay when it hits above

that level.

 

VOLLEYBALL (CO-REC)

 

     Competition and rules same as above with two rule additions.  3 men and 3 women play at the

same time.  If the ball is hit more than once on each side, each sex must hit the ball.

 

VOLLEYBALL (SAND)

 

     Competition:  Round Robin Tournament     

 

     Rules:  USVBA will govern play with the following exceptions:              

     A team consists of 4 players.  A team can start with 3 players.  25 minute time limit.  Switch

sides of court at 13 minutes. Only win by one point.  In case of a tie, next point wins.  Server

cannot spike.  The ball cannot be set over the net.  A player cannot touch the net, but he/she may

go under the net as long as the player does not come into contact with a player on the opposing

team.

 

WING DING GOLF

    

     Competition:  One day event.  Individual or team.  To be eligible for team score, a team must

 have 4 groups of  2 players.

 

    Rules:  USGA and local course rules govern play.  No organization may enter more than 8

 groups.  Medal play.  The individual 2-person team with the lowest score earns 10 points

 towards their team?s totals.  Captain?s choice format.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

                              A. F. S.     3% STUDENT ACTIVITY FEE GUIDELINES

 

 

                                               An Addition to the A. F. S.  Bylaws

 

Article XI.     Furman University Intramural Sports

 

     Section I.     Name.

 

        A.     The name of this organization shall be The Furman University Intramural Sports Program.

 

     Section II.     Purpose.

 

        A.     The Furman University Intramural Sports Program shall provide all Furman University students the opportunity to participate in a variety of sports activities.

 

        B.     The Furman University Intramural Sports Program, through the playing of organized games, shall provide the student with any or all of the following:

                    a.     physical fitness

                    b.     social interaction

                    c.     mental relaxation

                    d.     skill development

                    e.     competitiveness

 

     Section III.     Governing Body.

 

          A.    The governing body of  the Intramural Sports program, known as the Intramural Sports Council, shall consist of 6 men and 6 women.  All students interested in serving on the Council must obtain and return an application to the Director of Recreational Sports by March 31, of each year.  Selection will be based on the proven interest of the candidates in the intramural sports program and will be made by the Director of Recreational Sports, with the majority approval of each nominee by the existing Intramural Sports Council.  Once a member of council, a student may remain if he/she so chooses until his/her graduation from Furman.

 

     Section IV.     Organization and Operation.

 

        A.     Under the leadership of the Director of Recreational Sports, who is not a voting member, the Intramural Sports Council will act on any proposals presented to them.

 

        B.     Meetings of the Council may be called by the Director of Intramural Sports or by any member of the Council. as one deems it necessary.  There will be a minimum of one meeting per term.

 

     Section V.     Funding

 

        A.     The Intramural Sports program shall annually receive a portion of the student services budget, with the amount determined by the University Budget Committee.

 

        B.     The Intramural Sports budget shall be supplemented by 3% of the student activities? fees, to be received directly from the business office at the beginning of each term.

 

     Section VI.     Amendments
