Furman Advantage

The Furman Advantage Program provides competitive fellowships to students who obtain full-time summer internships with an academic component directly related to their major or career goals and meet the criteria outlined below.
Application to the Advantage Program: Students who want to be considered for the Advantage Program should complete the student section of the application by the deadline for each potential internship, even if the internship is not finalized by the deadline date (in early March).

Summer 2007 Melissa Summer, who received a Furman Advantage stipend, completed her internshp at the YWCA Child Daycare Center in Greenville.

Eligibility:
The internship's academic component will be evaluated based on the value of the internship and the content of the Furman Advantage application which asks the student and the internship site sponsor to describe:
  • the opportunity the internship provides in applying academic studies to the work experience
  • the evidence that the internship will result in a meaningful experience in which the intern is involved in significant professional work
  • the relationship of the internship to career goals

Students at all levels may apply. Preference for fellowships will be given to eligible internships during the summer after the junior year, followed by eligible internships during the summer after the sophomore year.

Internships must be full-time (40 hours per week) for a minimum of 8 continuous weeks.

Internships on the Furman University campus will not be eligible for a Furman Advantage stipend.

Applications for international internships in areas listed on the government sanction list http://ustreas.gov/offices/enforcement/ofac/programs/index.html  or on the
State Department Travel Warning List http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_1764.html  will not be elgible for the Furman Advantage Program.

Receiving a fellowship from the Advantage Program does not prohibit students from participating in a Furman University summer internship course. Students must consult individual academic departments for the course requirements.

Students who apply for Furman Advantage and want to take additional summer courses (beyond the Furman internship course) must include information about the courses when submitting the Furman Advantage application and explain how the student plans to meet the requirements of both the internship and the course work during the summer.
