Washington, DC
Department of Political Science

Work for a congressman, intern on capital hill, and rub elbows with
Washington elite. Furman’s Washington, DC program lets you do it
all while still earning course credit.
The initiative is one of the oldest Engaged Learning opportunities at
Furman, and has been in existence for nearly three decades. Students
spend twelve weeks learning about politics “up close and personal.”
The center-piece of the program is an internship arranged for the student
by The Washington Center. Internships are tailored to the students’ interests
and may include work on Capitol Hill, a government agency, an interest
group, a law office, or one of a myriad of other institutions. Typically
a student will work at his or her internship for 35 hours per week.
The remainder of participants’ time is spent in a seminar with
a Furman professor or in conducting political science fieldwork. Students
receive credit for three political science courses: The Washington Experience,
Fieldwork in Politics, and an upper division course that rotates each
term.
Students are accommodated in luxury apartments in locations that vary
from Arlington, Virginia to Bethesda, Maryland.
