Department of International Education

Are you ready for the challenge of studying at one of Europe’s oldest universities on your own? If so, we invite you to consider spending a fall term at the University of Groningen in The Netherlands.
Founded in 1614 and the second oldest university in the country, Groningen is located in the northeastern area of the nation some 30 miles from the German border. The city of Groningen with a population of 180,000 has it all: an old town center around the university, an outdoor town market along with canals and dykes but in the bustling, modern center of an entire region. The school has a population of 20,000 and a distinguished, internationally prominent faculty.

Our affiliate program is with their Faculty of Letters which contains all of departments we associate with the Humanities. Furman students have taken courses in the Dutch language, Dutch History in the 20th Century, Dutch Culture, European Unification as well as Dutch art. Our students tend to have majored in English, History, German, Political Science or Sociology but all majors are eligible to participate.

While at Groningen our students live in an international dormitory with students from around the world. These dormitories have kitchen facilities and are very close to the center of the old town.
The program is especially attractive to students who receive scholarship aid at Furman since they pay no more to attend the University of Groningen than they would for the fall term at Furman. However, additional expenses include overseas airfare as well as the costs of additional travel. Most students take advantage of this prime location to visit Belgium, Germany and France as well as Amsterdam and other Dutch cities.
