Japan

Department of Asian Studies

Students interested in experiencing the rich and diverse culture of Japan have access to two unparalleled opportunities through Furman’s Department of Asian Studies.  The university sponsors two exchange programs—one with Waseda University in Tokyo and another with Kansai Gaidai University in Osaka.

The Waseda program is ideal for students hoping to advance their mastery of the Japanese language.  Each year, two Furman students are chosen to take part in the exclusive program at this ultra-urban university where their course work focuses on Japanese language, Asian studies, and general interest courses with an emphasis on language study.  In order to be eligible, students must have taken at least one class in Japanese language and preferably be willing to commit to a full year of study at the university.  Accommodation for students is typically in an international dormitory.

Furman’s exchange program with Kansai Gaidai University has no pre-requisites and can serve as an introduction to Japan for the curious student or as a center for continued Japanese learning for those with more experienced with Asian Studies.  Participants are offered the choice of either one term or full year periods of study.  Kansai Gaidai University is located in the Kansai region of Japan, home to the ancient Kyoto and Nara capitals.  Most students enrolled in the program live with a Japanese host family, allowing them to be fully immersed in Japanese culture.
