Departments of Communications and Religion

“When in Rome…” is the mantra behind the Communication and Religion departments’ joint study abroad initiative in Italy.  The program seeks to provide students with a genuine Italian experience, from quaint, cozy lodgings to authentic meals.

The adventure starts in Rome, where participants spend three weeks engaged in guided tours to important historical and religious sites, group meetings and discussion, and individual time for site-seeing, wandering, and studying.

From Rome, the group continues to Florence, Naples, Venice, Ravenna, and Milan.  In the course of their travels, participants will also complete two courses taught by Furman professors.  Rome, Ritual and Sacred Space will examine the complex interplay between religious ritual and the space where it is performed and experienced.  Studies in Rhetoric will examine how theories of rhetoric emerged in classical Rome, were transformed in Medieval Italy, and reappeared in the classical Ciceronian form in the Renaissance.

The extended stay in Rome will give students the opportunity to “settle in” to a city and assimilate themselves with the Italian way of life, while the group travel will allow them to experience a vast array of breathtaking scenery and sites.

Applications for the program are due in March of the proceeding year.  Participants are expected to complete some preliminary course work prior to departure for Italy.  For more information, please contact the Department of Religion or the Department of Communication Studies.
