Furman
students get the chance to spend twelve weeks living in Louis XIV’s back yard with the French Department’s
study abroad program to Versailles, France.
In Versailles, students live with local families while
taking classes in French culture, grammar, and drama from native instructors. Most
of the host families live within walking distance of the incredible Chateau
de Versailles, stronghold of the French court from its construction until
the Revolution. This unique location gives participants the chance to
explore French history in one of its most influential settings.
Classes, which receive full Furman credit, focus on improving students’ comprehension
of and fluency in the French language as well as expanding their knowledge
of French culture and history. The unique immersion experience
of living with a family provides limitless opportunities to experience
the routine of day-to-day French life.
Versailles is a mere 30 minute train ride from Paris, and
students will participate in both organized and spontaneous excursions
to the “City
of Lights.” Group outings will include guided tours of Monmartre,
Notre Dame and St. Chapelle, the Musee d’Orsay, and the Louvre.
The program also includes a number of weekend excursions and a 14 day
land tour of France, with destinations such as Normandy, the Loire Valley,
Grenoble, Lyon, Tolouse, Provence, and the French Riviera.

of Modern Languages and Literature.
