The United Kingdom and Europe

The Department’s of English, History, and Theatre

Furman University’s annual program to the United Kingdom affords students with a vast array of truly unique opportunities.  In the twelve weeks they’ll spend on the other side of the Atlantic, participants will immerse themselves in the art, culture, and history of the British Isles.

The journey begins with a three week tour of the major historical and literary sites of England, Scotland, and Ireland.  Those with a flair for the dramatic can then spend two to three weeks at Stratford-upon-Avon attending plays and theatre work shops run by the Royal Shakespeare Company.  After the productions, cast members make themselves available to discuss their craft and answer questions.  Students hoping to be a bit more mobile may spend two to three weeks exploring the concept of pilgrimage.

All participants re-group in London, where they stay in the Bloomsbury district and participate in a final five weeks of lectures and local fieldtrips.  Between visits to historic sights such as Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London, students can discover the rich cultural life of the city and attend a variety of concerts, films, and theatrical productions.
