Students looking for a singular kind of immersion experience should consider
Furman’s study abroad program to Santiago, Chile. Participants
will spend seven weeks experiencing the Chilean summer while living with
local families and taking courses at Universidad Católica de Chile,
one of Latin America’s most prestigious institutions.
What makes the Chilean program truly unique is the “amigos” program,
which gives Furman students the chance to interact with college-aged
Chileans who help them become familiar with the youth culture, provide
information about project resources, and opportunities to learn first-hand
about many facets of life not normally covered in the classroom setting.
While participants spend time in the classroom studying Spanish language
and Latin American culture with native professors, the program also includes
a wide array of weekend excursions and travel opportunities designed
to provide them with even greater exposure to the diverse facets of Chilean
landscapes and lifestyle. One trip, to the south of Chile, introduces
students to a region inhabited by the Mapuche indigenous people, with
pristine lakes, spectacular volcanoes, wild forest, and water sports. Another
excursion to the north, presents an entirely opposite landscape: the
driest desert in the world, indigenous descendants of the Incas, and
salt lakes at 4,000 feet above sea level.
In addition, students will have the opportunity to attend
cultural events and listen to lectures by Chilean professionals while
they discover the engaging city of Santiago.
