Departments of Political Science and History

Participants in the Political Science and History departments’ Africa Study Abroad program spend eight weeks winding their way along the southern cone of Africa, stopping in such flagship cities as Johannesburg and Cape Town.  While the majority of the program takes place in South Africa, students also spend time in Botswana and Namibia.

The academic focus of the program is the political climate of post-apartheid South Africa and the historical formation of the modern nation states.  During the course of the excursion, students meet with a variety of scholars, politicians, political activists, and authors.  Additionally, the itinerary includes visits to such sights of interest as the Drakensburg Mountains, Wilderness National Park, battlefields from the British-Zulu war in 1879, and the city of East London.

When they’re not involved in class work, students will find ample opportunity for exploring the natural beauty of the African landscapes, including hiking excursions and visits to wildlife preserves.
