Greening the grounds
If you noticed some dingy brown spots on the university grounds, dont worry. Its not some strange fungus eating away at the Furman grass. As part of the annual Fescue seeding process, the grounds crew sprays Round-Up in areas that are heavily infected with weeds or Bermuda grass. Grounds Supervisor Greg Burriss says crews will be seeding the campus, including the mall area, until October. Bermuda grass was planted throughout campus during the late 50s and early 60s during construction. However, as the grounds have become more shaded, Fescue a cool season grass has been phased in. Burriss says the entire campus should be green again by late October just in time for Homecoming. Did you know The Personnel Department collected more than 110 "school tools" bags for needy area students this summer. The bags, which were filled with items such as calculators, notebooks, binders, pens, pencils, crayons, markers, scissors, glue, eraser, paper and folders, were donated by employees and individual departments. Money was also collected. Each student also received a book bag. The items were distributed by the United Way of Greenville County last month.
