United Way campaign to focus on first-time givers, students
The United Way campaign at Furman will have some different twists this fall. The fund-raising initiative, which runs through October 31, will extend to students for the first time. In another first, this year's campaign has a theme: "Gimme Five."
"We really want to encourage those who have given in the past to continue their level of generosity," says Kim Adams, director of student leadership programs, who is coordinating this year's effort. "The Gimme Five campaign is focused on those who have not given to the United Way in the past. We are encouraging them to give just $5 a month."
Last year, 208 Furman employees, or 28 percent of campus workers, contributed $40,073 to the United Way of Greenville County, up from $38,256 in 1999. The campaign goal for this year is $45,000.
"I know that this is a very aggressive goal, but I think the student campaign, coupled with our efforts to encourage first-time givers, will boost our fund raising," says Adams.
In addition to monitoring fund-raising progress through the United Way thermometer at the front gate, employees may also access the Furman United Way Web page.
The United Way of Greenville County supports some 40 health and human service organizations. The non-profit agency raised more than $10 million for area charities last year.
Donors may designate their gifts for specific organizations or make a general donation. Community volunteers, not United Way staff, decide how the money is distributed.
