Outlaws, Paladins and Cougers take home cup

The Charleston men's team and the College of Charleston women repeated as Palmetto Tournament Champions November 9 while the host team Furman men defeated a resurgent College of Charleston in the finals to keep the Low Country from sweeping to victory.

Weather for the tournament we windy, but sunny both days. Games were played on the newly named John Roberts Pitch at Furman and a nearby football practice field.

The Charleston men rolled to a 36-10 win over Augusta and a 43-31 victory over Columbia to claim the Palmetto Cup. C of C, meanwhile, took care of USC women (5-7), Furman (39-0) and the Citadel (21-0) to take home top honors. Furman path to the championship was earned with victories over Clemon (34-7) and the Citadel (18-5). The surprise team of the tournament was the College of Charleston, who defeated Clemson (41-20) and defending champion Coastal Carolina 21-19 to earn a berth in the finals.

Furman, who has finished runner in the Palmetto Tournament the last three years, spoiled the Cougers upset bid in the finals, winning a fiercly competive match 7-0.
