College of Charleston, Charleston men, Furman claim Palmetto Cup (posted 11/08)
The Charleston men's team and the College of Charleston women repeated as Palmetto Tournament Champions November 9 while the host team Furman men defeated a resurgent College of Charleston in the finals to keep the Low Country from sweeping to victory. Weather for the tournament we windy, but sunny both days. Games were played on the newly named John Roberts Pitch at Furman and a nearby football practice field.
The Charleston men rolled to a 36-10 win over Augusta and a 43-31 victory over Columbia to claim the Palmetto Cup. C of C, meanwhile, took care of USC women (5-7), Furman (39-0) and the Citadel (21-0) to take home top honors. Furman path to the championship was earned with victories over Clemon (34-7) and the Citadel (18-5). The surprise team of the tournament was the College of Charleston, who defeated Clemson (41-20) and defending champion Coastal Carolina 21-19 to earn a berth in the finals. Furman, who has finished runner in the Palmetto Tournament the last three years, spoiled the Cougers upset bid in the finals, winning a fiercly competive match 7-0. more...

2007 The Palmetto Tournament: C of C women, Charleston men CCU take home cup (posted 11/07)
The College of Charleston women's team and Coastal Carolina Univeristy successfully defended the Palmetto Cup while Charleston defeated Greenville to take first place in the men's club division.
The tournament -- held November 10-11 at Furman Unversity -- was held under sunny but somewhat blustery conditions. The Charleston men ran past defending champion Augusta 47-5 to earn a spot in the finals against Greenville who defeated Columbia Olde Grey 20-12. In a tighly contested finals, Charleston defeated Greenville 20-13. In the women's bracket the College of Charleston cruised past Furman (37-0) and the Citadel (31-7) to recapture the Cup. Coastal Carolina defeated USC 18-5 to advance to the finals to face Furman, which defeated the Citadel 17-10 to earn a berth in the finals. CCU blitzed Furman for three trys in the first 15 minutes. By the time the Paladins recovered it was too late as CCU claimed a 28-14 victory.For all the scores click here.

The Palmetto Union: Five years and beyond (posted 7/07) In 2003, the Palmetto Rugby Union was bankrupt and nearly folded. One of the smallest unions in the nation, the organization was bankrupt, poorly organized, financially mismanaged and lacking direction. The union had not fielded a competitive college all-star team since the late 1980’s and two of the union’s most reputable teams – Clemson University and Greenville – had severed ties with Palmetto in the 1990s, electing to join the Georgia Rugby Union. Greenville goes 1-1 in pool play (posted 5/07) Making thier first trip to the USA Rugby Play-off pool play since 1998, the Greenville Griffins were overrun by Red Mountain 67-7 in thier first game. The team, however, bounced back for a 32-26 win over Norfolk the next day. more...

Furman falls one point short in National DIII finals (posted 4/07) The DIII Rugby South Division III men's champions ran past Longwood 36-18 in the DIII National Final Four Tournament. But the squad lost a heartbreaker 11-10 to defending champion Bentley College (Boston, MA) in the finals. Furman completes the season with a 11-1 record. more...

Giant Killers (posted 4/07) The smallest union in the South had the biggest success during the March 31-April 1 Rugby South College Championships. The tiny Palmetto union qualified more teams for the play-offs than any other union, save North Carolina . Four teams: the Citadel women, Citadel men, College of Charleston women and Furman men were among the field of 16 teams participating. Palmetto teams finished 6-2 overall and were 4-0 against schools from other unions. In fact, the finals in two of the four championships featured All-Palmetto match-ups. When the dust settled, two Palmetto teams – Furman men and College of Charleston women – collected championship trophies and the Citadel men and women were South Runner-up. more...
