Giant Killers

The smallest union in the South had the biggest success during the March 31-April 1 Rugby South College Championships. The tiny Palmetto union qualified more teams for the play-offs than any other union, save North Carolina . Four teams: the Citadel women, Citadel men, College of Charleston women and Furman men were among the field of 16 teams participating.

Palmetto teams finished 6-2 overall and were 4-0 against schools from other unions. In fact, the finals in two of the four championships featured All-Palmetto match-ups. When the dust settled, two Palmetto teams – Furman men and College of Charleston women – collected championship trophies and the Citadel men and women were South Runner-up.

Compared to the Deep South (12 men's and women's college teams), Florida (14), Georgia (10), Mid-South (18), and North Carolina (23), the Palmetto Union fields nine men's and women's teams, about 10 percent of the total teams.

In first round games, the Citadel women squashed the University of Tennessee and the College of Charleston women defeated East Carolina 15-13. On the men's side, Furman bested Louisiana 39-34 while the Citadel squeaked by Wake 30-31.

In the end, only Palmetto teams could defeat Palmetto teams as Furman captured the Division III crown with a 24-10 win over the Citadel and the College of Charleston broke open a tight game to beat the Citadel women 24-7.
