Celebrating Community in Y2K
By the end of next year we should all know one another better. With support from a Knight Foundation Presidential Leadership Grant, the university will host numerous events throughout the year 2000 that are designed to bring the entire university faculty, staff and students closer together. Furman will kick off the "Y2Community" program during a February 1 luncheon at Timmons Arena. The university will close during the gathering, which will include entertainment and a talent contest. A 10-member committee made up of faculty, staff, students and administrators is generating event ideas for the year. An outline of upcoming Y2Community events will be announced at the luncheon. Such activities might include a shadowing and exchange day, theme-oriented university gatherings, and community-improvement projects, such as adopting a local elementary school. Some ideas also include hosting a concert or holding a field day. "As we become immersed in our busy work and study schedule, it is sometimes easy to forget that Furmans sense of community is our greatest strength," says David E. Shi. "It is the Furman family that makes this university such a special place." Last year, Furman was one of five liberal arts colleges from across the nation that were awarded $150,000 Presidential Leadership grants from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Use of the funds is left to the discretion of the college president. Members of the planning committee are A.V. Huff, Harry Shucker, Linda Julian, Elaine Nocks, Vic Greene, Mary Hearne, Susan Zeiger, and students Allen Cothran, OShea Gamble and Celeste Riddle. Marketing and Public Relations will post a web site with Y2Community events early next year. Committee is looking for volunteers to work during Y2Community luncheon February 1. The first ten volunteers will receive a pair of tickets for the Peter, Paul and Mary concert November 5 at Timmons Arena. To volunteer, call the Personnel Office at extension 3015.
