Montague Village to undergo renovation
Constructed in 1958 to
house married students, Montague Village will be renovated next summer and
become an administrative office complex.
Wendy Libby, Vice President for Business Affairs, says no decision has been made as to which departments will be relocated to the center. Candidates include Marketing and Public Relations, Administrative Services, Computing and Information Services, Public Safety and Development.
With students clamoring to live in the North Village apartments, Montague Village will no longer be needed to house students. The renovation of Montague Village will free additional space for academic departments while providing more spacious quarters for administrative offices. And renovating is much less expensive than new construction.
Located on the south end of campus (beyond Facilities Services) and accessible from Duncan Chapel Road, Montague Village consists of seven one-story buildings with a total square footage of 16,668 feet. Montague currently houses about 80 students. The area is named for Andrew Philip Montague, who was president of Furman from 1897 to 1902.
Libby says Furman administrators will be working with architects during the academic year to develop a new floor plan for Montague, which could include enclosing the porch areas, connecting the buildings and constructing an access road.
"None of the interior walls of the buildings are weight-bearing. This helps give us more design options," says Libby.
In more news about departments moving from here to there, Admissions and Financial Aid will be relocating to the ground floor of the administration building later this month. The adjoining Welcome Center will be completed in November.
The departments of Continuing Education and Graduate Studies, currently on the second floor of Furman Hall, will also be getting a new home - the ground floor of Hipp Hall. Construction on the new academic building is expected to begin late this fall and to be completed in approximately 18 months.
The relocation of these departments will free more space for academic departments while paving the way for the renovation of Furman Hall, which is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2002.
